Vaikasi Visagam Festival
( 10:30 AM, Sat, May 30, 2026 )

- Description
Vaikasi Visagam is one of the most celebrated festivals in the Tamil Hindu calendar, observed during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June) on the asterism (nakshatra) of Visakha. It holds profound significance as the star of birth of Lord Murugan — the day when the six-faced deity, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is believed to have been born and also the day He received the divine Vel (sacred spear) from His mother Goddess Parvati to vanquish evil.
This auspicious occasion is celebrated with great fervor at Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu and among Tamil communities worldwide. The festivities typically include:
- Special abhishekams and alankaram (decoration) of Lord Murugan with flowers, sandal paste, and sacred ornaments
- Procession of the deity on a grand vahana (divine mount), often the peacock or the golden chariot
- Vel Puja — special worship of the sacred spear symbolizing divine knowledge and the destruction of ignorance
- Recitation of Thiruppugazh, Kanda Sashti Kavacham, and other devotional hymns in praise of Murugan
- Community gatherings with annadanam (free meals offered to all devotees)
For devotees of Lord Murugan, Vaikasi Visagam is considered one of the holiest days of the year — a time to seek His blessings for wisdom, courage, victory over adversity, and spiritual liberation (moksha).
