Kothanda Ramar Abhisekam
About Kothanda Ramar
The name "Kothandaramar" comes from Lord Rama being depicted holding a bow called the Kothandam — hence the name Kothandaramaswamy. Lord Rama's idol with the bow symbolizes His readiness to protect devotees from all difficulties. He is typically enshrined alongside Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman.
What is Abhisekam (Thirumanjanam)?
Abhisekam (also called Thirumanjanam) is a sacred ritual bathing of the deity. The idol of Lord Kothanda Ramar is ceremonially bathed with holy substances such as milk, curd, honey, tender coconut water, sandalwood paste, and sacred water, while Vedic hymns and the Ramayana are chanted. It is one of the most important and spiritually potent acts of worship in Vaishnavite temples.
Significance & Benefits
This special Thirumanjanam performed to Lord Sri Kothanda Ramar and Sri Seetha Pirati is believed to grant child boon, spiritual energy, sound health, and Ashta Aiswaryam (eight forms of wealth). It is said to help rid devotees of marriage-related issues and bring timely marriage. It also gives the devotee a turning point in life and helps protect from all evil forces.
Devotees also offer curd rice to Anjaneya (Hanuman) during rituals, a unique practice believed to remove obstacles and Navagraha Dosham. Sanatana Vibes
Special Occasions for Abhisekam
Sri Ramanavami is celebrated for 11 days with grandeur, including special alankarams (decorations), processions, and recitations of the Ramayana. In the month of Chithirai, Akshaya Tritiya day sees special poojas performed to Sri Kothanda Ramar and all the deities. In the month of Margazhi, Adyayana Urchavam is also performed.
Temple Context
The most famous Kothanda Ramar Temple is located on the serene shores of Rameswaram, surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and the Gulf of Mannar. It is the only historical structure to have survived the devastating 1964 cyclone that destroyed the nearby town of Dhanushkodi. It is classified as one of the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams of the Vaishnavate tradition.
Participating in or sponsoring the Abhisekam of Kothanda Ramar is considered highly auspicious — it invokes the blessings of Lord Rama for protection, prosperity, marital harmony, and spiritual liberation.
