Shanmugar Abhishekam is a sacred ritual bathing ceremony dedicated to Lord Shanmugar — another beloved name for Lord Murugan, meaning "He of the Six Faces" (Shan = six, Mukha = face). Each of His six faces (Aaru Mugam) represents a divine quality: creation, preservation, destruction, concealment, grace, and liberation — and collectively they radiate His omniscient, all-encompassing divine presence.

In this abhishekam, the deity is ceremonially bathed with a sequence of sacred substances — milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, turmeric water, rose water, and coconut water — while priests chant the Shanmuga Ashtottara (108 names of Shanmugar), Vedic hymns, and passages from Thiruppugazh and Kanda Sashti Kavacham. Each ablution purifies and illumines a different divine aspect of the Lord.

The ritual concludes with alankaram (sacred adornment with flowers and jewels), deepa aarti, and distribution of prasad to devotees.
