What is Chitra Pournami?

Chitra Pournami is a special day observed by Tamil people on the full moon day of the Tamil month Chithirai (April–May). Each month, the full moon occurs under a specific star. In the month of Chithirai, the Pournami falls under the Chithirai Nakshatra. It is the first Pournami after Tamil New Year.

Chitra Pournami is observed when the Sun and Moon reunite, marking a spiritually potent occasion dedicated to the worship of Bhagwan Chitragupta.

Who is Lord Chitragupta?

Chitragupta is unique among deities because he is considered the only one who directly records human actions, providing a balance between the physical and spiritual realms. His meticulous record-keeping ensures that cosmic justice is upheld, influencing human destinies and reincarnations.

The very name Chitragupta holds deep symbolic meaning — \'Chitra\' refers to images or records, and \'Gupta\' signifies the hidden or concealed. Regarded as the younger brother of Bhagwan Yama, the god of death, Bhagwan Chitragupta plays a crucial role in meticulously recording the karmic deeds of all beings, ensuring the balance of dharma and justice in the cycle of life and rebirth.

The Legend Behind Chitra Pournami

Once Lord Indra and his teacher Brihaspati had an argument and Indra ignored his teacher\'s advice. Brihaspati became reticent and Indra began to commit many mistakes. Later, Brihaspati returned and asked Indra to make a pilgrimage to Earth to lessen the burden of his sins. After coming to Earth, Indra found a Shiva Linga and began to pray with a golden lotus on the day of Chitra Pournami, and was redeemed of his sins.

According to another legend, Chitragupta was created by Goddess Parvati in the form of a divine painting, and later, he was born through the divine cow Kamadhenu on this very day.

Spiritual Significance

When the first Full Moon of the Vedic New Year shines in the Chitra star, it is called Chitra Pournami — the Moon of \"Balancing Karma.\" To this energy, Chitra star adds energies of abundance and regeneration. Therefore, the Moon on this day overflows with positive and creative energies that are effective in clearing the negative karma that restricts you from enjoying wealth, health, and relationships.

Key Rituals & Observances

🔱 Fasting (Vrat) Observing a fast on Chitra Pournami is considered extremely meritorious. Devotees wake up before sunrise during Brahma Muhurta, take a ritual bath with sesame seeds, turmeric, or holy basil leaves mixed in the water, wear white or light-colored clean clothes symbolizing purity, and light a ghee lamp with prayers to the rising sun.

🌙 Chandra Darshanam (Moon Gazing) A major highlight of Chitra Pournami is Chandra Darshanam — the viewing of the full moon. After completing the evening rituals, devotees step out onto their doorstep or terrace, gaze at the moon, and offer heartfelt prayers.

🍚 Special Naivedyam Chitranna preparation is the specialty of Chitra Pournami. The devotees fasting on this day pray to the Moon and Chitragupta and offer Chitranna as Naivedhyam. Then, when the puja is over, they break their fast by eating the Chitranna as prasad.

🚶 Girivalam (Sacred Circumambulation) Many devotees undertake a 14-kilometer Pradakshina (circumambulation) of Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai, which is said to grant Moksha (liberation).

🌊 Sacred Bath In several parts of Tamil Nadu, especially along riverbanks, people take ritual baths during Chitra Pournami. It is believed that bathing in sacred rivers on this day can cleanse one of past sins and bad karma.

🎨 Kolam (Rangoli) The festival often features Kolam competitions, where women and young girls create intricate designs with rice flour. These Kolams are believed to welcome prosperity and divine blessings into homes.

🍱 Annadanam (Food Donation) One of the most significant rituals of Chitra Pournami is Annadanam — feeding Brahmins, the needy, and animals. This is believed to erase past karmic debts and invite divine blessings.

Temple Celebrations

Special puja is arranged in temples on this day such as the Chitragupta Temple in Kanchipuram, Airavateshwarar Temple in Darasuram, and Chandra Mouliswar Temple in Thiruvakkarai. Devotees also perform pujas at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai to worship Shiva.

Chitragupta Gayatri Mantra

Chant this mantra 108 times using a rosary (mala) for best results, ideally during Pradosh Kalam (evening twilight):

ॐ चित्रगुप्ताय विद्महे कर्म साक्षिणे धीमहि तन्नो चित्र: प्रचोदयात् \"Om Chitragupta ya Vidmahe Karma Sakshine Dhimahi Tanno Chitra Prachodayat\" \"We meditate upon Chitragupta, the witness of all karma.\"
