Surapadaman Set
Soora Samharam Offering for Lord Murugan
Om Saravanabhava
On the sixth day of Skanda Sashti, Lord Murugan raises His divine Vel against the asura Surapadman, and good triumphs over evil. The Surapadaman Set lets devotees take part in this sacred moment. Your offering joins the Soora Samharam pooja on behalf of your family, and a sankalpam is performed in your name.
The Legend of Soora Samharam
The asura Surapadman performed severe penance and received a boon that no ordinary being could destroy him. Made arrogant by this power, he and his brothers, Simhamukhan and Tarakasuran, conquered the three worlds and held the Devas captive.
To restore dharma, Lord Shiva sent forth six divine sparks from His third eye. They came to rest in the lotus pond of Saravana Poigai and became six radiant children, nursed by the Krittika maidens. When Goddess Parvathi embraced them, they became one: Shanmukha, the six-faced Lord.
Parvathi Devi gave Her son the Shakti Vel, the spear of divine wisdom. After a six-day battle at Thiruchendur, Surapadman took the form of a great mango tree to escape. Murugan’s Vel split the tree in two. In His boundless compassion, the Lord transformed the two halves rather than destroying them:
Half of the Tree Became Role
First half Mayil (Peacock) Lord Murugan’s divine vahanam
Second half Seval (Rooster) Emblem on His victory flag
So even the greatest enemy, once humbled by grace, was given a place at the Lord’s feet.
